You'll Never Be The Same

From L to R: Bambi Cruz, Bob Speelman, Lashonda Prince, Chris Thornton

Note: This story is taken from the blog of Bob Speelman, VP of Business Development and Culture at Foundations Health Solutions. Each week Bob works at one of his facilities as a nursing assistant to better learn the Foundations’ commitment to providing a Culture of Care.

My journey as an STNA took me to Beachwood Pointe, our 120 bed nursing home in Beachwood, Ohio. Bambi Cruz is the Director of Nursing there and her love and passion for her staff and residents is making a difference. She is assembling a remarkable team of caregivers and encouraging those that have been there for a while that what they do matters.

One of those employees that has been there for a while is a nursing assistant by the name of Chris Thornton. I first met Chris when we acquired the facility back in 2005. Chris is a sort of utility employee that does a little bit of everything; scheduler, restorative, concierge - he’s the glue that holds things together. His love for the residents is obvious when you see him interact with them. Chris is one of those employees that never seeks attention or accolades, and is at the core of our Culture of Care.

I worked alongside another such employee at Beachwood by the name of LaShonda Prince. LaShonda is 29 years old and has four daughters that are everything to her. I ask LaShonda what she did for fun and she said “anything with my kids… Chucky Cheese, Lego Land, etc.” Her love and passion for her residents was equally as impressive. When LaShonda entered her resident’s rooms she would immediately start talking and laughing with the residents. It was like they were family to her. As we began washing up the residents and getting them ready to start the day I was impressed with how thorough and efficient LaShonda was with getting her residents ready.

LaShonda told me she knows “how good it feels when you get cleaned up in the morning and ready to start your day.” LaShonda would encourage each resident to get up and get dressed and go down for activities or down to the dining room to eat. It’s always heartwarming and humbling to be in the presence of a caregiver whose passion to care for others just pours out of them. It’s a calling and it’s who they are.

LaShonda, Chris and Bambi – Thank you for what you do every day! Your selfless giving and caring is an example for all of us and at the core of what we are striving to be as a company. You are our Culture of Care.

“Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.”
- Og Mandino
