Medical Mystery turned into Success Story

June 14, 2019
Ciara was a healthy, working mom living a normal life when one day she woke up and was unable to move her arms and legs. After several emergency room and hospital visits, doctors couldn't identify a diagnosis for the 33-year-old. So, she admitted to Beachwood Pointe Care and Rehabilitation for therapy to try to get her limbs functioning again.

At Beachwood Pointe, Ciara received therapy daily from trained physical and occupational therapists. Her condition remained the same, and she still didn't have a diagnosis for what was causing her limbs to go numb. After working with Ciara for several weeks, her therapist Steven told her that he thought she might have Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare but serious autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks healthy nerve cells in the peripheral nervous system, leading to weakness, numbness, and tingling. It can eventually cause paralysis.

Ciara was tested for Guillain-Barré syndrome; and, sure enough, Ciara's test was positive. Unable to move her limbs, on oxygen, and having been undiagnosed for four months, Ciara was relieved to finally have an answer. But, now came the hard part: Ciara had to wait while her body fought the disease and continue to participate in therapy so her muscles and joints stayed as healthy as possible.

"I did everything in my power to keep moving," Ciara said. "I just kept looking forward to getting home to my mom and my daughter."

For the six weeks, while Ciara was at Beachwood Pointe receiving therapy with her Guillain-Barre syndrome diagnosis, she said her stay was as pleasant as it could be, considering her circumstances.

Formerly a home healthcare aide, Ciara knows the importance of providing quality care and identifying a patient's needs.  She said that the care staff at Beachwood Pointe was very perceptive and accommodating.

"Because I couldn't move my arms, they gave me a special remote and a special phone," Ciara said. "Shanana, especially, was really sensitive to my needs. She was one of my favorite nurses." ?

Rehabilitating in a private room, Ciara said she also enjoyed the accommodations and food at Beachwood Pointe. She said the chicken fingers were her favorite meal.

"I would recommend anyone to come here," Ciara said of Beachwood Pointe.

Ciara is now back home, continuing her therapy and recovery. She plans to go back to school to be a nurse.

"I want to help people the way they helped me [at Beachwood Pointe]," Ciara said. "I'm going to do it."
The staff at Beachwood Pointe agrees with Ciara – she is indeed going to do it. They are proud of all she has accomplished and appreciate the opportunity to care for her. Great job, Ciara!
